Nigeria lost the decisive playoff match 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Rabat, ending hopes of automatic progression.
With the victory, DR Congo is now set to represent Africa in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled to take place in Mexico, where final slots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be decided.
NFF Not Satisfied, Files Appeal
Reacting to FIFA’s decision, NFF Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi said the federation is dissatisfied with the outcome.
“We have received the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on our petition, but we are not satisfied with the decision… the NFF has immediately commenced the process of appealing the decision,” he stated.
World Cup Hopes at Risk
The Super Eagles last appeared at the World Cup during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
After missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria now faces the possibility of missing back-to-back World Cup tournaments for the first time since its debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
What Happens Next
With the appeal now underway, attention turns to whether FIFA or higher football authorities will reconsider the case before the intercontinental playoffs begin.
For Nigerian fans, the situation remains tense as the country’s hopes of returning to the global stage hang in the balance.
