The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory warning American citizens about a possible terrorist threat targeting U.S. government facilities and institutions linked to the United States in Nigeria.

Zilla Naija gathered that the warning, published on the embassy’s official website, urged American citizens currently living in or visiting the country to remain vigilant and take additional safety precautions.

According to the advisory, the embassy alerted U.S. nationals to “a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.” The mission specifically advised individuals to exercise caution when traveling to locations connected to the United States.

These locations include the U.S. Embassy Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General Lagos, as well as schools affiliated with the United States operating in the country.

While the advisory did not reveal the specific source, timing, or nature of the potential threat, it stressed the importance of heightened security awareness, particularly around diplomatic premises and institutions connected to the United States.

The embassy recommended that American citizens adopt precautionary security measures when moving around such locations. One of the key recommendations was to vary travel routes and times when visiting U.S. facilities in order to avoid predictable movement patterns.

The advisory also encouraged individuals to remain alert in public areas and maintain a low profile in order to reduce potential risks.

“Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk,” the statement noted.

Safety Precautions for U.S. Citizens

As part of the security advisory, the embassy listed several safety steps for Americans currently in Nigeria. These included:

  • Being aware of their surroundings at all times

  • Keeping a low profile in public spaces

  • Reviewing personal and family security plans

  • Avoiding predictable travel routines

  • Keeping mobile phones charged for emergencies

The mission also advised citizens to remain cautious in crowded places and avoid gatherings or demonstrations that could pose security risks.

“Stay alert in public places and avoid crowds and demonstrations,” the advisory stated.

In addition, individuals were encouraged to familiarize themselves with emergency exits whenever entering buildings or public facilities, ensuring they know possible escape routes should an emergency situation arise.

Earlier Security Concerns in Abuja

The latest advisory comes shortly after the embassy took precautionary steps earlier in the week due to security concerns in the capital city.

Zilla Naija recalls that the United States Embassy in Nigeria previously cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for March 4, 2026, citing concerns over potential protests in Federal Capital Territory.

In the public notice announcing the decision, the embassy explained that the cancellation was necessary due to the possibility of protests in Abuja, which could pose safety concerns around diplomatic premises.

Growing Focus on Security Awareness

Security advisories from foreign missions are typically issued as precautionary measures intended to inform citizens about potential risks and encourage them to take steps that enhance personal safety.

Although the embassy did not provide details about the nature of the alleged threat, the notice highlights the importance of vigilance and preparedness for individuals living or traveling within Nigeria.

Zilla Naija will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if further information becomes available from security authorities or diplomatic officials.
