President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shared candid details about the struggles and challenges he faced on his path to becoming President of Nigeria, saying the journey was far from easy, Zilla Naija reports.
Tinubu made the revelation on Friday in Lagos when he received members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited him as part of Sallah homage at his Lagos residence.
Tinubu Says He “Took the Punch” and Stayed in the Fight
Addressing the gathering, Tinubu said he didn’t shy away from adversity during his political climb — instead, he faced it head‑on, even when things got tough.
“Instead of dodging the bullet, I took it. I took a punch in the chin, a very hard one,” Tinubu said, describing the political battles that marked his rise to the presidency.
He thanked loyal governors who supported him throughout the journey, including during difficult moments when the campaign and political momentum needed unity and resilience.
Defending Hard Reforms and Economic Pain
Tinubu also defended his administration’s controversial reforms, including the fuel subsidy removal, insisting the tough choices helped avert a potential economic collapse and set Nigeria on a path toward recovery.
He told the visiting governors that although the reforms brought hardship, they were necessary to stabilise Nigeria’s finances and rekindle economic growth.
Agenda for Growth and Stability
The President highlighted several areas where he believes progress is being made, including:
- Improvement in economic indicators
- Expansion of infrastructure projects
- Growth in the agricultural sector
- Job creation and food security initiatives
Tinubu also expressed optimism that Nigeria’s economy is picking up steam, pointing to ongoing road constructions, rehabilitation projects and investments in agriculture.
