Zilla Naija gathered that Nigeria has launched a major $750 million renewable electrification initiative aimed at expanding electricity access through solar off-grid and mini-grid systems across the country.
The ambitious project includes the installation of about 1,350 solar mini-grids nationwide, designed to provide reliable electricity to communities that currently lack stable power supply. Out of these installations, approximately 250 mini-grids will also be connected to the national grid, helping to strengthen Nigeria’s broader electricity network.

According to reports monitored by Zilla Naija, the initiative is expected to deliver electricity to about 17.5 million Nigerians, particularly those living in rural and underserved communities where access to power has remained limited for years.

The programme is also expected to attract significant private investment, with projections indicating it could generate up to $1.1 billion in private-sector funding to support the expansion of solar energy infrastructure.
In addition to the mini-grid initiative, Nigeria has already begun implementing several other renewable energy projects under the Energising Education Programme.
Currently, 15 large-scale solar power projects under this programme are already supplying electricity to various universities and teaching hospitals across the country. Authorities say eight additional projects are also in the pipeline, which will further expand solar power access within key educational and medical institutions.

Furthermore, public institutions and government agencies are benefiting from another initiative known as the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative.
The programme, which has a funding pool of about $74 million, is designed to reduce reliance on costly diesel generators by providing solar-powered electricity systems for government facilities.
Energy experts say the scale of Nigeria’s solar investments is drawing the attention of international investors who are looking at opportunities within the country’s growing renewable energy sector.
With a combination of government funding, international support, and private-sector participation, analysts believe Nigeria’s solar electrification push could become one of the most significant renewable energy programmes ever implemented on the African continent.
