In many communities in northern Nigeria, maternal and child health is considered exclusively a woman’s affair. In Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State, that age-long belief is being overturned.
Under the UNICEF-supported Fathers for Good Health initiative, men are going from house to house to persuade their peers to support their wives to attend antenatal care, deliver in health facilities and immunise their children.
Safiyanu Yahaya, leader of the group in Darazo East, described the task as demanding but fulfilling.
