Heart Disease Now Leading Cause of Death Among Nigerian Adults — Cardiologist

A leading interventional cardiologist, Dr. Yemi Johnson of First Cardiology Consultants, has raised concerns over the growing burden of heart disease among adults in Nigeria, identifying cardiovascular conditions as a major cause of death in the country.

Johnson said heart disease encompasses a range of serious conditions, including heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases, with high blood pressure emerging as one of the biggest underlying risk factors.

According to the cardiologist, Nigeria is grappling with a significant burden of hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity, all of which increase the risk of cardiovascular complications.
