The football extravaganza, tagged ‘His Excellency Ambassador Alex E. Kefas Cup’, was organized by indigenes to celebrate a distinguished diplomat whose career has projected Nigeria’s image globally.
Ambassador Kefas, a career diplomat of international repute, has served Nigeria meritoriously as Charge d’Affaires in Libya, and in strategic diplomatic postings to the United Nations, New York, Cuba, Romania, Poland and several other countries. He remains a pride of Adamawa and a symbol of excellence for the Chamba nation.
The maiden edition attracted 20 football clubs from across Ganye and beyond who battled through pulsating group stages to the grand finale.
The colourful event was spiced with rich traditional cultural dances, masquerade displays and chants, turning Jarandi City into a carnival of sports and unity. Dignitaries from across Adamawa State and neighbouring Republic of Cameroon graced the occasion, underscoring Ambassador Kefas’ wide influence beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Chairing the occasion was another diplomatic heavyweight, Ambassador Kevin Peter, former Nigerian Ambassador to the Czech Republic, who served as Chairman and Special Guest of Honour.
In the final match watched by a mammoth crowd, defending champions Freedom Fighters Football Club of Jarandi City* lost 0-1 to Balauru Selected Football Club, who emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Ambassador Alex E. Kefas Cup.
