National Assembly Suspends Official Visits to South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks

Nigeria’s National Assembly has suspended all official visits to South Africa and directed lawmakers, committees, officials and staff to boycott legislative activities hosted by the country, citing persistent reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals.

The directive, which takes effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice, followed consultations between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen.

The National Assembly said the decision was prompted by reports of Nigerians and other foreign nationals being killed, injured, displaced and having their properties destroyed in South Africa.
