A disturbing incident in Lagos has drawn the attention of law enforcement after a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly selling his sister’s one-month-old baby for ₦2 million.

Zilla Naija gathered that the suspect, who lives in Igbogbo in the Ikorodu area of the state, reportedly claimed he carried out the act in an attempt to raise funds for their late mother’s burial.

The situation came to light after the baby’s mother later reported the matter to the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest by the Lagos State Police Command.

Authorities disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed investigation.

Speaking with journalists, the suspect reportedly admitted to the act but attributed his actions to financial hardship. According to him, he came in contact with the woman who allegedly purchased the baby through Facebook.

He explained that after discussions, the buyer asked that the baby be brought to Mile 2 in Lagos, where a man sent by the woman allegedly received the child. He further claimed the buyer transferred ₦2 million into his bank account following the exchange.

The suspect also stated that he gave his sister ₦500,000 from the money, while the remaining funds were used to organise their mother’s burial.

However, he alleged that after the burial, his sister began demanding that the baby be returned, claiming she was not fully aware of the situation and accusing him of influencing her decision.

The suspect further told reporters that he does not personally know the woman who allegedly bought the baby and has no information about her residence. He added that attempts to reach her through the phone number used during the transaction have so far been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that investigations are currently ongoing.

According to him, the suspect will be charged to court once the investigation is completed.

Zilla Naija will continue to monitor the case and provide updates as more details become available.
