WARDC Urges FG to Reform Abortion Laws, Cites Maternal Death Risks

The Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently reform Nigeria’s abortion laws, arguing that criminalisation contributes to unsafe abortion and preventable deaths among women and girls.

The organisation made the call in a statement issued on Monday to mark the 2026 International Safe Abortion Day, themed, “Solidarity in Action: Advance Reproductive Justice and Urgently Strengthen Health Systems for Comprehensive Abortion Care.”

WARDC said Nigeria would struggle to significantly reduce maternal mortality if unsafe abortion continued to be overlooked as a preventable cause of death and serious health complications.
