No Ban Yet: Minister Says Nigeria Must Build Local Solar Capacity Before Restricting Imports

The Federal Government has ruled out an immediate ban on solar panel imports, saying Nigeria must first develop sufficient domestic manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand for renewable energy.

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Udeh, said the government was working to attract international investors and expand local production rather than restrict imports before Nigerian manufacturers could adequately supply the market.

The decision comes amid concerns from renewable energy stakeholders and businesses that an import ban could increase the cost of solar equipment, disrupt ongoing projects and limit access to affordable electricity for millions of Nigerians.
