Nigerian workers commence nationwide strike today over escalating hardship

Public sector unions under the aegis of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have directed federal, state and local government workers nationwide to commence a three-day warning strike from midnight on Friday, October 2, over worsening economic hardship and the Federal Government’s failure to address their demands.

The directive affects employees of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) across the three tiers of government, with the council ordering its affiliate unions to ensure total compliance with the industrial action, reports Vanguard.

The JNPSNC said the strike followed the failure of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to respond to demands contained in its September 21, 2026 letter to the President.
