A tragic incident has unfolded in southern Lebanon after a Catholic priest reportedly lost his life following Israeli shelling in a border community that has been facing growing tensions in recent weeks.

Zilla Naija gathered that Father Pierre al-Raai, a priest from the Christian village of Qlayaa, died after sustaining injuries during two separate attacks on the outskirts of the community.

According to reports from the Lebanon National News Agency, the priest and several other residents were injured during the attacks in the Marjayoun District. The village is located south of the Litani River, an area that has recently been under heightened security alerts.

Local officials say Qlayaa had previously remained relatively unaffected compared to other areas experiencing cross-border attacks. However, the situation changed as military activity intensified in parts of southern Lebanon.

Authorities in Lebanon say that at least 486 people have been killed across the country since March 2, amid escalating tensions in the region.

Priest Chose to Remain With His Community

Before the tragic incident, Father al-Raai had reportedly made it clear that he would not abandon his congregation despite growing fears and evacuation warnings affecting communities south of the Litani River.

In a voice message reportedly shared with local residents, the priest encouraged villagers not to panic and reassured them that the church remained open to anyone seeking refuge.

“We have never fled… and we will not flee now either,” he reportedly said in the message.

He also invited those who were afraid to seek shelter in the church while the crisis continued, emphasizing solidarity among members of the community during the difficult period.

Growing Concerns in Christian Communities

The incident has also raised concerns among other Christian communities living in southern Lebanon as tensions in the region continue to escalate.

Reports indicate that civilians in nearby areas are beginning to consider evacuation due to safety concerns.

For example, residents in Alma al-Shaab, located about 43 kilometers from Qlayaa, are reportedly preparing for possible evacuations with assistance from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

According to the town’s mayor, Chadi Sayah, the situation in the region has become increasingly tense following recent attacks.

In a video message shared earlier in March, he told residents that despite the danger, many people still hoped to remain on their land and continue living peacefully.

Calls for Peace Amid Rising Tensions

The death of Father al-Raai has sparked sadness among local residents and religious communities who viewed him as a symbol of dedication to his congregation.

Observers say the incident highlights the growing humanitarian concerns surrounding civilians living in areas affected by ongoing military tensions in the region.

Many community leaders continue to call for peace and protection for civilians as the situation develops.

Zilla Naija will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
