Fidelity Bank Plc is facing renewed questions over the security of customers’ funds and the effectiveness of its internal controls after a Lagos court convicted former bank employee Chukwuebuka Nweke in a case involving the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from a customer’s account.
The conviction has raised concerns about how access to banking systems is controlled, how suspicious transactions are detected and whether safeguards are sufficiently robust to prevent employees from exploiting their positions to compromise customers’ accounts.
Nweke was convicted on Monday, October 19, 2026, by Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, following a prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
