Family writes IGP, seeks thorough investigation into disappearance of brother’s corpse

The Okammelu family has written the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to request a supplementary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the corpse of their late brother.

The request was made in a letter written by Joseph Ofor, Esq, counsel to Chief Osita Okammelu, the complainant in the matter, and addressed to the IGP. Okammelu had earlier petitioned the IGP over the disappearance of the brother’s remains.

Following the petition, the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team, IGP-IRT, was mandated to investigate the matter. A report of the investigation has since been released.

However, in the letter to the IGP, dated July 6, 2026, Okammelu, through his lawyer, Ofor, expressed reservations about the report of the investigation.

The letter stated that the report contained several material omissions, inconsistencies and investigative gaps which substantially affect the completeness, fairness and credibility of the investigation.

“Among other concerns, the report appears to: Admit the existence of possible criminal conspiracy and systemic failures, yet recommend prosecution of only one person;

“Acknowledge that significant aspects of the investigation remain outstanding while simultaneously recommending immediate prosecution;

“Identify serious administrative and operational negligence without adequately investigating or recommending appropriate action against all persons who may bear criminal responsibility;

“Rely on financial records, call data records and other documentary exhibits without making comprehensive findings therefrom.

“And leave unresolved, several critical issues relating to the chain of custody of the deceased’s corpse, the roles of other listed suspects, institutional responsibility, and the circumstances surrounding the unlawful release and disappearance of the corpse,” parts of the letter read.

The letter noted that a detailed analysis identifying the gaps has been prepared to demonstrate why the IGP-IRT investigation report requires further review.

“In the interest of justice, public confidence in the investigative process, and the need to ensure that every person who may bear criminal responsibility is properly investigated, our client requests that your distinguished office be pleased to direct a supplementary investigation into the matter, with particular attention to the issues highlighted,” the letter addressed to the IGP added.

The letter further stressed that a thorough and comprehensive investigation will ensure that the truth is fully uncovered and that justice is done to all parties without fear or favor.
