The Delta State Ministry of Justice has commenced a capacity-building programme for police officers in the state on the lawful procedures for obtaining and recording confessional statements.
The move is in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, ACJL, 2022.
The training, organised by the Ministry’s Effurun Zonal Office under the leadership of its Zonal Head, Mr Theophilod Omenuwoma, is being conducted pursuant to the directive of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole.
The exercise has so far covered officers and men of the Ebrumede and Ugborikoko Police Divisions, Uvwie Local Government Area, with the next session scheduled to be held at the Enerhen Police Division.
The exercise is expected to be extended to other police divisions across the state.
The programme is designed to familiarise police personnel with the legal requirements governing the taking of confessional statements, strengthen investigative procedures and promote compliance with the provisions of the state’s criminal justice law.
During the sessions, participants received practical guidance on the proper procedures for obtaining, recording, and documenting confessional statements, with emphasis on transparency, accuracy, accountability and adherence to due process.
The interactive sessions also provided opportunities for officers to ask questions, seek clarification on practical challenges and deepen their understanding of the legal framework governing criminal investigations.
DAILY POST reports that proper handling of confessional statements is an important aspect of criminal investigations, as compliance with established legal safeguards helps protect the rights of suspects, preserve the integrity of evidence and support the fair administration of justice.
Officers who participated in the training expressed appreciation to the ministry for the initiative, noting its relevance to their professional responsibilities.
