Burkina Faso Opens First Gold Refinery, Moves to Take Control of Mineral Wealth

Burkina Faso has inaugurated its first-ever gold refinery as the West African country moves to process more of its mineral resources domestically and retain greater value from its gold industry.

President Ibrahim Traoré, who presided over the inauguration, said the refinery marked an important step in the country’s efforts to take greater control of the entire gold value chain.

Traoré said Burkina Faso should no longer rely solely on exporting raw minerals while importing finished products derived from its own natural resources.
