Human rights activist and popular blogger Justice Mark Chidiebere, widely known as Justice Crack, has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) after spending weeks in detention, Zilla Naija can report.
The release was confirmed on Thursday night by fellow activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who took to social media to announce that Justice Crack had regained his freedom following intense public pressure and legal efforts.
In a statement shared online, Sowore described the blogger’s detention as “unjust and unlawful” and celebrated his release as a victory for justice and freedom of expression. He wrote, “Justice Crack is out now. He is finally free from the unjust detention imposed by the lawless Department of State Services (DSS). This victory belongs to all who spoke out, resisted intimidation, and demanded justice.”
Legal Background
Justice Crack was earlier granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on May 18, 2026, in the sum of ₦5 million, with strict conditions including the provision of a surety, proof of residence, and the surrender of his international passport.
However, his release was delayed in part because the DSS had held onto his passport, complicating his ability to fully comply with the bail conditions — a move that sparked criticism from rights groups and activists.

He had been prosecuted by the DSS on alleged cybercrime offences linked to a viral video concerning the Nigerian Army that authorities claimed was false and capable of undermining public peace, charges to which the activist pleaded not guilty.
