Zamfara Repeat Looms: Parties That Missed 3-Week Rule May Contest No Election — INEC Commissioner

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may bar some political parties from fielding candidates in the forthcoming elections after failing to comply with a requirement to submit their membership registers at least three weeks before conducting party primaries.

Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner Information and Voter Education disclosed this while speaking on the implications of a recent Supreme Court judgment, which he said had strengthened the commission’s position that political parties must comply with the three-week membership-list requirement before their primaries.

According to the commissioner, INEC is expected to meet next week to take a final decision on the matter, amid growing anxiety among political parties, candidates and members of the public.
