Atiku, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, described Tinubu’s absence from the 2026 UNGA as the third consecutive year in which the President had delegated representation to Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Tinubu did not attend the 79th UNGA in 2024, while Shettima represented him at the 80th session in 2025. The Presidency confirmed on Sunday that Shettima would again lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st UNGA, scheduled to hold in New York from September 22 to 28.

Atiku said the repeated absence could no longer be dismissed as an isolated occurrence, arguing that the President’s personal presence at major international diplomatic gatherings was important to Nigeria’s interests.
