The Council Chairman of the University of Abuja, Senator Olarenwaju Tejusho, is facing fresh allegations of trying to impose Mr. Alkassim Umar as the institution’s Substantive Registrar, despite corruption allegations against him.
Documents obtained by Zilla Naija News reference a June 8, 2026 petition to the ICPC by A Broom for Every Home Initiative, BEH, and other CSOs.
Mr. Umar served as UniAbuja’s Establishment Officer between 2021 and 2024. In the petition, BEH accused him of diversion of Remita funds, illicit enrichment, and abuse of office.
“His emergence can only be linked to corrupt considerations,” the petition stated. The CSOs argued that someone under anti-graft investigation is unfit and unqualified to serve as Registrar, the University’s chief administrative officer.
The petition, signed by Prince Babatunde Kolawlole, President of BEH, urged ICPC to audit Mr. Umar’s bank records and asset declaration, and to halt the appointment process.
Zilla Naija NNew believes allowing the appointment will signal that “crime pays in our universities.” The media house is calling on the Federal Ministry of Education and ICPC to intervene.
As at press time, Senator Tejusho and UniAbuja management had not responded. ICPC confirmed receipt of the petition.
