The government of Enugu State has commenced the construction of modern Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across all political wards in the state as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.

According to the state government, the initiative spearheaded by Governor Peter Mbah involves the building of brand new healthcare facilities in each of the state’s 260 political wards.

Officials disclosed that all the healthcare centres are currently at different stages of completion, with work ongoing on construction, furnishing, equipping, and staffing.

Modern Healthcare Infrastructure

Governor Mbah’s administration says the project is aimed at replacing outdated and dilapidated facilities that had suffered years of neglect.

Before the new initiative, many of the existing primary healthcare centres in the state were reportedly operating in structures that had deteriorated significantly over time.

Rather than renovate the aging buildings, the state government opted to build entirely new healthcare facilities designed to meet modern medical standards.

Moving Beyond Decades of Neglect

The government explained that the decision to construct new facilities instead of refurbishing old ones was necessary because many of the inherited structures had already exceeded their useful lifespan.

Officials noted that the new centres are being designed to meet 21st-century healthcare requirements, ensuring improved medical services for residents across the state.

The move is also expected to enhance access to healthcare in rural communities where residents often struggle to reach functional medical facilities.

Improving Grassroots Healthcare

Primary healthcare centres serve as the first point of contact for most citizens seeking medical attention, particularly in rural areas.

By establishing a modern PHC in every political ward, the government aims to improve services such as:

  • Maternal and child healthcare
  • Immunization programs
  • Basic emergency treatment
  • Disease prevention and health education

Healthcare experts say strengthening primary healthcare is critical to reducing pressure on secondary and tertiary hospitals.

Commitment to Healthcare Reform

Governor Mbah’s administration described the project as part of a broader commitment to transforming healthcare infrastructure across the state.

Officials emphasized that residents of Enugu deserve modern healthcare facilities capable of delivering efficient and reliable services.

According to the government, the ongoing project reflects a forward-looking approach to healthcare development.

“Tomorrow is here,” the government stated, highlighting its determination to build a healthcare system that meets the needs of the people.
