France Records First Human Case of Shamonda Virus as Patient Dies

French health authorities have reported the first known human case of the Shamonda virus, a disease previously associated with livestock, after an infected patient died earlier this month.

The patient, who was severely immunocompromised, had been hospitalised for a serious medical condition before dying, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday by France’s health and agriculture ministries.

The authorities said the virus had circulated in Africa and Asia for several decades but had never previously been detected in humans.
