At 66, Nigeria’s Flag Still Flies, But Its Promise Has Not Landed — Ebuka Ukoh

As Nigeria prepares to mark its 66th Independence anniversary, PhD student and co-author of Built By The Ancestors, Ebuka Ukoh, has challenged Nigerians to look beyond celebrations and critically examine whether the promise of independence has translated into better lives for citizens.

In an opinion article titled “Nigerian Independence Wasn’t Ready-Made; We Have to Work for It 66 Years Later,” Ukoh argues that political sovereignty alone does not amount to true independence, insisting that Nigerians must demand accountability while also accepting their individual responsibilities in building the country.

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, when the Union Jack was lowered and the green-and-white Nigerian flag was raised.
