The Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF) has called for the urgent establishment of a comprehensive legal framework to protect whistleblowers and their families in Nigeria, warning that fear of reprisals continues to discourage many citizens from exposing corruption and other wrongdoing.
The organisation made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the launch of its investigative report titled “Dirty Deeds,” which examines issues surrounding corruption, accountability and the movement of illicit funds across borders.
The Executive Director of PPLAAF, Mr. Jimmy Kande, said effective whistleblower protection was essential to encouraging Nigerians to report corruption and other forms of wrongdoing without fear of intimidation, retaliation or other consequences.
Kande noted that PPLAAF had previously participated in discussions surrounding proposed whistleblower legislation in Nigeria and remained committed to advocating stronger protection for whistleblowers in collaboration with relevant organisations.
