The late former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, left behind a strong warning about the danger of imposing candidates and decisions on members of political parties, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy could not thrive where internal party democracy was sacrificed.
Tukur, who died at the age of 91, had repeatedly criticised the culture of political “imposition” and advocated for a system in which party members were allowed to freely elect their leaders and candidates.
In an ARISE NEWS interview shared in a recent Leadership post, the former PDP chairman revisited his long-standing position on internal democracy, stressing the need for political parties to embrace genuine participation rather than allowing powerful individuals to determine the outcome of party processes.
