New York Catholic Church Agrees to Pay Over $800 Million to Settle sexual Abuse Claims by 1,300 Victims

The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay more than $800 million to settle sexual abuse claims brought by approximately 1,300 people who alleged they were abused by clergy members and other individuals in leadership positions within the Roman Catholic Church.

The proposed settlement, reported by The New York Times, is aimed at resolving years of legal battles involving alleged abuse within the archdiocese.

Lawyers representing the claimants reportedly announced the agreement in an email to priests on Friday. However, the settlement is not yet final, as it requires approval from the alleged victims, their legal representatives and the archdiocese.

Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks confirmed the development on Saturday, expressing hope that the agreement would provide some measure of healing for survivors.
