Media aide to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his reported remarks on attempted suicide, insisting that suicide is a cry for help and should not attract criminal punishment.
Ibe described Akpabio’s reported comments as insensitive and inappropriate, arguing that people who attempt suicide need compassion, professional mental health support and counselling rather than threats of imprisonment.
In a statement addressed to the Senate President, Atiku’s aide faulted his reported suggestion that some young Nigerians contemplate suicide because they believe seven virgins await them in the afterlife.
